Flu 2020/2021

The Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications.

Flu can be unpleasant, but if you’re otherwise healthy, it will usually clear up on its own within a week.

But certain people can be at risk of more severe complications, these people are:

  • anyone aged 65 and over
  • pregnant women
  • children and adults with an underlying health condition (such as long-term heart disease, respiratory disease, or diabetes)
  • children and adults with weakened immune systems

Anyone in these ‘At Risk’ groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it’s recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to help protect them.

When will the flu clinics be held?

Our clinics for those patients aged 65yrs and over (if you are 64yrs but will turn 65yrs on or before 31 March 2021) please book into the 65yrs and over clinics with our nurse.

For those aged 18-64yrs in a clinical risk group only we are sending invitations out during October once we have had the delivery of your vaccinations.  Our first clinic will be on

  • Wednesday 21st October – please contact us between 10am and 2pm to book an appointment when you receive your SMS text reminder

For the proposed extended vaccination campaign for those patients aged 50-64yrs  you will be recalled later in the year when we have further information from NHS England and Public Health. We are expecting this will be some time in October/November therefore we are not taking any bookings for these groups of patients at present.

For those aged 2/3 yrs old we will be holding separate clinics for these children, and parents will be contacted regarding this. This vaccination is given via a nasal spray unless clinically indicated. The clinic dates for these are:

  • Thursday 22nd October
  • Thursday 5th November

(For those children aged 4-11 years, parents will be contacted by the school immunisation team and vaccination will be offered routinely through school).

How do I book?

Invitations are initially being sent to those eligible by text message by a member of the practice team.   Please call the surgery on 01773 712552 and SELECT OPTION 4 to be directed to the ‘flu hotline’ where you can book directly into an available clinic. This service will be available between 10am and 2pm. Please do not ring to book a flu appointment outside of these hours so that we may keep the lines free for urgent appointment and visits requests.

If you think you are at risk and qualify for a free flu vaccine but haven’t received an invitation, please telephone or email the practice and a member of the practice team will check this for you.
